Born as Mary Ann Sawyer, Lorelei Roux was born in the summer of nineteen forty-five in Greenwood, Mississippi as the youngest child to Leory and Irene Sawyer.

After the death of her father in a work-related accident months prior to her birth, her mother had been left to take care of her new-born child despite her ill health. Growing up in extreme poverty had been nothing but relentless, contributing to her mother’s failing health as well as Lori’s own. With a lack of access to healthcare, Irene Sawyer eventually passes from her illness shortly after her youngest daughter’s sixteenth birthday.

Within weeks Lori had been plucked from the backwater town she’d known all her life and placed to live with her older sister, Bettie Lou miles south in Vicksburg. It was clear that Lori’s stay hadn’t been anticipated by her sister, and Bettie Lou’s husband had been vocal that she’d earn her place in their household—or else.

However, to her relief, her stay with them had lasted only a mere month, for she had met a truck driver named Marvin McGraw, and within two weeks they eloped at the local courthouse with blessing from her sister, who saw it as an ample opportunity get Lori out from under her feet as well as the household.

Lori had been quick into her new life as a wife, and barely weeks after their marriage she fell pregnant. Within weeks, Marvin had unfortunately lost his job, and to cope with her newfound unemployment he turned to drinking. He didn't spare his young bride of violence, and often took whatever anger he had out on the girl, and the abuse doesn't falter as the debt they had accumulated continued to rise.

After a significantly turbulent outburst that led to the miscarriage of her unborn child, Lori, fuelled by grief, attacks him and assumes him to be dead. With hopes of getting rid of any evidence there may be, she douses the home she had shared with him in gasoline before setting it ablaze, and escapes before the local sheriff is able to arrive.

With what little money she had quietly kept saved away and a small assortment of personal belongings, she travels south into Louisiana to locate her other sister, Gail, who'd claimed residence in New Bordeaux.

Her first weeks after arriving in Bourbon City are unforgiving, but she’d soon found work as waitress, fueled by nothing more than to find her estranged sister.
